Evans - 536 Emerald Bay Rd. South Lake Tahoe, 530-542-1990, 6.0 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Nestled in a vintage Tahoe cabin, surrounded by towering pine trees.  Top Zagat rated restaurant in the Sierras.  Reservations required.

Sage Room Steakhouse - Across the street from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, on the main floor of Harvey’s Casino, 775-588-2411, A elegant Western-themed steakhouse that has been a landmark since its opening in 1947.  Reminiscent of a traditional log cabin, the space features the original bar and hand-hewn beams that were part of the log cabin that housed Harvey’s Casino in 1944.  Closed Tues. and Wed.

Unique sites:

Thunderbird Lodge - Incline Village-Crystal Bay Visitors Center, 969 Tahoe Blvd, Incline Village, NV, 800-468-2463, 24.0 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  The Thunderbird Lodge is one of the last and best examples of a residential estate on Lake Tahoe from a period in which prominent San Francisco society built homes on the lake.  You are shuttled from the Incline Village Visitors Center to the estate where a docent will guide you through the furnished home, grounds and the 600 ft. tunnel connecting the main house with the boathouse.  The boathouse contains the completely restored and operational 55 foot mahogany hull Thunderbird speedboat, built in 1939, powered by two Allison 1100 HP. aircraft engines.  Call for reservations, tours available during late Sept. and early Oct. on Tues. Fri. and Sat.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center - 1 Heritage Way South Lake Tahoe, 530-543-2674, 8.3 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Rainbow Trail at Taylor Creek named for the rainbows that sparkle in the morning dew, the trail is a special place.  It loops through the largest meadow/marsh at Lake Tahoe.  Take an easy 45-minute walk along any of the four self-guided trails.  

One of the most interesting things to do at Taylor Creek Visitor Center is take the short walk on the Rainbow Trail to the Stream Profile Chamber, where you can observe a section of Taylor Creek's underwater environment through a panel of windows.  This is an amazing vantage point from which to see the bright red Kokanee salmon run in late Sept. and early Oct.  Along the way you will pass through a pine forest, a marsh and groves of colorful aspen.  While at Taylor Creek Visitor Center stroll over to the Tallac Historic Site walk the grounds of the Baldwin estate, the Pope estate and Heller estate (Valhalla).  All of these sites and parking are free.

Town of Genoa, NV - Located on the western side of Carson Valley, this is the oldest settlement in Nevada 17.4 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Site of the famous Candy Dance Faire held this year on Sept. 29 and 30.  Besides the Genoa Historic District this small town also has Nevada’s oldest “thirst parlor,” the Genoa Bar and Saloon built in 1853 which was patronized by Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt and Johnny Cash to name a few.  It was used in movies such as, The Shootist (John Wayne), Misery (James Cann), Honky Tonk Man (Clint Eastwood) and others.  While visiting be sure to ask the bartender about the Raquel Welch story.

Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course - 100 Lake Parkway Lake Tahoe, NV, 888-881-8659, 0.7 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Enjoy a game on their acclaimed 18-hole course with age-old pines, emerald greens and snow-capped Sierras cutting sharp lines across the stunning blue sky isn’t just scenic-it’s iconic.  This is the course that hosts the annual Celebrity Golf Tournament.  http://www.americancenturychampionship 

The Gondola at Heavenly - 4080 Lake Tahoe Blvd South Lake Tahoe, 775-586-7000, one block from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Enjoy the view of Lake Tahoe and the Sierras from over 10,000 feet elevation.

Virginia City, NV – Historic silver mining town 40.3 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Virginia City is known as the home of the Comstock Lode and one of the largest mining camps west of Denver.  Today, its trusty wooden sidewalks carry visitors who come to see this real life bonanza as well as the icons known around the world.  Step back in time.

Carson City, NVNestled between Lake Tahoe and Virginia City, 25.5 miles from Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.  Capitol of Nevada boasts many fine restaurants, golf courses, museums and the historic state capitol building.  Have lunch at Café at Adel’s, a beautifully restored 1864 Comstock Mansart Victorian and former judge’s home. Combine explorations by taking the steam driven train from Carson City to Virginia City on either Sat. or Sun.  There is a layover in Virginia City for sightseeing before the return trip.

Scenic Lake Tahoe drive - Drive the entire 68-mile shoreline of Lake Tahoe in the clockwise direction, this will provide the breath taking view of Emerald Bay when driving towards Tahoe City. While passing through Tahoe City be sure to visit the Gatekeeper’s Museum located at 130 West Lake Tahoe Blvd open Wed. – Sun. 11 am to 4 pm.  This is the location of the only water outflow from the lake.  Because of the many photo opportunities and sites allow several hours for this fantastic drive.  When passing through Incline Village, be sure to stop at the Hyatt and enjoy the lake view from the Lone Eagle Grill.  If you arrive between 6 pm and 10 pm on Wed. – Sat. enjoy live music by request.
